Miss Irene Welden Contributes Books

Volume 4 Issue 3 August 1997

The Library’s Board of Trustees are most grateful to Miss Irene Welden for her gift of about four hundred books. Miss Welden built her collection of genealogical books as she researched her own family history. The books, which generally cover subjects in the northeastern United States, have been catalogued and shelved and each bears a bookplate honoring Miss Welden as the donor.

Spring Open House to Be Held (and other stories)

Volume 4 Issue 2 May 1997

Gather your charts and notes and bring them to Open House from 10 AM to 3 PM on May 10th. Librarian Stephen Simon will be joined by volunteers to help get beginners started and assist the more advanced genealogists with those thorny problems that can stall research.

The Search For Shamrocks in Simsbury (and other stories)

Volume 4 Issue 1 March 1997

A stroll through the old cemetery across from St. Bernard’s Church in Tariffville is a step back in time to the days when ambitious emigrants from Ireland came to the Simsbury area in search of work and new home in America.

Birthday Books (and other stories)

Volume 3 Issue 5 December 1996

Among the treasures in the Simsbury Free Library Collections are two birthday books belonging to the members of the Winslow family. Birthday books kept track of the events in the lives of family and friends especially their birthdays in a small book that could be kept at one’s desk. It appears to be the custom for the owners of these books to have the actual person sign their name on the date to be remembered.
