Series Arrangement:
The collection is arranged chronologically in 4 series, a series being generally a 25 year span with some overlap as volumes are organized by the date when a case is closed.
Series 1: 1897 – 1925
Series 2: 1926 – 1950
Series 3: 1951 – 1975
Series 4: 1976 – 2003
Series 5: Index, 1850 – 1980 (approx.)
Series 6: index, 1750 -1850 (approx.)

The Simsbury Probate Records Collection contains legal documents that were created by the town court between the years of 1897 and 2003. The Probate Court is statutorily empowered with jurisdiction over a variety of family matters including the administration of estates, the appointment of guardian of minors, appointment of guardian of the intellectually disabled, appointments of conservator for the incapacitated, and the approval of adoptions. The volumes are organized by the date a case is closed.

Simsbury Probate volumes prior to 1920 were donated to the Connecticut State Library. Probate records post 2002 are electronic and available at Simsbury Town Hall.

A separate Surname index card catalog is part of the collection. The oldest index cards date back to the mid 1700s. Some of Simsbury’s oldest families have many probate records per family, including, but not limited too the following families: Bacon, Case, Hoskins, Humphrey, Goodwin, Pettibone, Phelps, Tuller, Wilcox and more.
